And so it begins, the Maxwell's Silver Hammers era is born and the team begins to take shape. In early June, the Hammers traded away their 1st, 2nd, and 5th round draft pick positions for key position players. Chad Johnson (WR), Tony Romo (QB) and Willis McGahee (RB) are the hopeful future of the infant franchise.
Silver Hammers owner, Erick Byrd, was on record as saying: "It was a calculated risk to get some quality players into the lineup. Some may question the tactics, but I believe it was in the team's best interest to build the cornerstones for our future before the league draft."
However, sources say that later, off the record, Byrd was overheard to say, "Those darn Agate Types really fudged up my trades! If I'd known he was gonna pick a rookie running back as a keeper, I would've kept the last pick for a better option than blanking McGahee. Well, at least I put up a good front for the press. By the way, who are you with? Oh you're with the press, ...fiddlesticks!"
